Al-Amal Women’s and Sociocultural Foundation, with the participation of advocates of ” A prisoner and I have the right to live in dignity” campaign on Monday, November 28, 2022, held a workshop to mobilize and win the support of community activists in order to activate and enhance protection mechanisms for women prisoners and activate the roles of media and human rights institutions. The workshop comes as one of the activities accompanying the advocacy campaign within Together for Her project to monitor the violations that occur to women by the parties to the conflict in Yemen.
The workshop began with a speech by Ms. Solaf Abboud Al-Hanshi, a member of the Board of Trustees of Al-Amal Women’s and Sociocultural Foundation. Ms. Solaf gave a brief overview of the importance of the workshop and a detailed explanation of the network ”Together for Her” to monitor cases of violations .
The workshop was conducted by Dr. Jassem Bousabaa, who gave a detailed narration of the basic rights of women prisoners, which are stipulated in the legislation and laws ratified in Yemen. The workshop aimed to enhance and raise the level of responsibility towards the woman prisoner and facilitate the access of civil society institutions to her to provide humanitarian, and legal assistance for her.
In order to achieve the set goals, the workshop focused on several topics, the most important of which was reviewing the conditions of women in prisons, detention and litigation facilities, and how to deal with them, and highlighting the policies adopted to take into account gender sensitivity, when designing and implementing activities, programs and services provided to women prisoners to ensure that these programs are taken into account in a way that guarantees justice, equality and protection .
Interventions and discussions were given by the representatives of the local authority, the Office of Endowments and Prisons, representatives of political parties, community committees, and the media.
At the end of the workshop, a paper of recommendations and outputs from the workshop was prepared to be submitted to the competent authorities and to follow up on their implementation.
