Women Human Rights Defenders Caught Between Passivity and Abandonment.

Violations against women human rights defenders, specifically those who advocate for women’s rights, are a pervasive issue in many societies worldwide. These courageous women, who fight for equality and justice, often face threats, defamation, violence, sexual harassment, and even murder. However, many of them remain silent and tolerate these abuses without publicly disclosing them because they are afraid of the violators or a culture of shame that encourages violators to persist and continue violating their rights.

Women’s rights defenders face numerous challenges and violations while fighting for equality and justice. They are frequently targeted by individuals and institutions opposed to gender equality and seeking to maintain male dominance.

Women’s rights defenders in Yemen are facing significant challenges and unspeakable abuses amidst an environment of turmoil, protracted armed conflict, and a debilitating humanitarian crisis. The situation is taking a severe toll on the lives of women and putting the safety of women’s rights defenders at great risk.

This article delves into the obstacles encountered by women’s rights advocates in Yemen and their persevering struggle toward attaining equity and fairness.

women’s rights defenders have faced numerous significant challenges in their quest to eradicate racial and gender discrimination, violence, and inequality. One of the obstacles they encounter is physical violence, with many of them experiencing physical assault and beatings, whether by individuals or armed groups. Such violent acts are frequently carried out to intimidate and silence them, thus suppressing their voices and impeding progress towards gender equality. Additionally, some of these advocates are subjected to harassment and assaults. They are constantly under threat and intimidated, receiving threats of violence and attacks on themselves and their families, whether by phone, email, or through social media. These threats are employed to curb their activism and distance them from the fight for women’s rights.

In addition, some women Yemeni defenders are subjected to arrest and enforced disappearance, detained without fair trial or clear accusations, and may be subjected to torture and cruel treatment in prisons and detention centers, which puts them at great risk and restricts their freedom and activism in defense of women’s rights. Many female defenders are subject to public defamation and defamation, and false news and rumors about them are spread to discredit them, harming them and their work, they are threatened with exposing their personal lives and public activity, which negatively affects their credibility and constrains their ability to work and achieve change,

Many women defenders fear for the rights and personal safety of women and their families if the violations they are subjected to are uncovered and live in a dangerous environment. Silence and surrender are a means to maintain their safety, along with the negative legal consequences, if they reveal the violations to which they are subjected. They may be arrested, slandered, or legally persecuted, which leads them to surrender and remain silent. More importantly, this lack of support and protection from society, institutions, and governments, drives them to be isolated and vulnerable to violators. The silence and surrender of defenders reinforce the persistence of violators and encourage them to continue to violate women’s rights.

Empowering women defenders means empowering the entire community. Achieving equality and justice for women will contribute to building a more developed and stable society. All must work together to uphold women’s

rights and ensure their full and effective participation in all aspects of social, political, and economic life in Yemen.

Practical, easy-to-implement, and urgent proposals.

First, compile and tally a list of types of violations to analyze the

quantitative and qualitative impact of environments on violations.

Second,   Establishment of a hotline to keep defenders on the line from the start to

the end of the violations.

Third, Coordinate with the relevant bodies to provide legal, educational, social, and psychological protection.
